Senior Electronic Engineer

Job Summary:


  • This is a senior engineer role in which the candidate will be expected to lead and mentor members of an engineering team.
    This role requires an ability to identify the core electronic requirements of a project and envision the full electronic portion of the system.

  • The candidate will be responsible for all electronics and/or electrical work for projects The candidate must be comfortable with the full product life cycle process. 

  • The candidate must have a high degree of experience in component selection, circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout.

  • The candidate should be highly proficient in automatic equipment systems that often include sensors (temperature, optical, etc.), discrete power supplies, or application processors, RAM, flash, high speed interfaces (USB, MIPI, LVDS), RF components/modules and electric wiring/layouts.

  • The candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of project managers, engineers, and designers to complete both product development and research tasks in a variety of industries and market segments.

  • Candidates with additional experience in other disciplines (systems engineering, mechanical engineering, firmware, software or physics) are preferred. 

  • This role will require close integration with the mechanic and firmware teams, so good communication skill is a must! 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of electricity and materials.

  • Confirms system's and components' capabilities by designing testing methods; testing properties.

  • Develops electrical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials.

  • Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for building and assembling electrical components; soliciting observations from operators.

  • Assures product quality by designing electrical testing methods; testing finished products and system capabilities.

  • Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

  • Provides engineering information by answering questions and requests.

  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with federal and provincial regulations.

  • Keeps equipment operational by following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting repair service.

  • Maintains product data base by writing computer programs; entering data.

  • Completes projects by training and guiding technicians.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree

  • At least three years of previous work experience in hardware design

  • A depth of experience in design and troubleshooting analog and mixed signal

        electronics

  • Highly proficient in PCB Layout and schematic capture software (e.g. Altium)

  • Highly experienced in multi-layer board design.

  • Experience with electrical system certification processes and requirements. Examples: CE, CSA, UL, FCC, IEC, ISO, Creepage and clearance requirements, Designing for and testing of EMC, Protection component selection and layout, Intrinsic safety experience highly desirable

  • Knowledge of digital systems design, debugging, and prototype assembly

  • Strong soldering and hardware debugging skills

  • Well versed with connectors, harnessing, and cable creation


Other Important Qualifications (in order of preference):


  • Several years of experience with Altium for schematic capture and layout

  • Well versed in many types of sensors and technologies as well as the circuitry used driving, reading, and controlling them

  • Strong layout experience in buried/blind vias, BGA break-out, high density component routing, flex/rigid PCB construction, high speed matched length/impedance routing

  • Discrete and complex power supply design experience: LED/Motor drivers, AC/DC and/or high voltage and/or high current converters

  • Some comfort level with firmware for microcontrollers (Free RTOS)

  • RF and antenna design

  • Familiar with Solidworks

  • Version control (SVN, Git)

  • Multidisciplinary engineering experience is an asset for this position

  • Ability to function independently with little supervision as well as working effectively in a team environment

  • Experience working in a client facing role or at an engineering consultancy


Compensation : 

Compensation for this role will be commensurate with experience and the degree to which the candidate fulfills the various requirements of the role.
